Another Thanksgiving has come and gone and now the shopping season begins for the “big” holiday we know as Christmas. But wait… Let’s stick with giving thanks for a bit longer. This special Thursday is generally spent with family and friends giving thanks for one another. As both of my daughters live out of state we were unable to celebrate together as a family but we did gave thanks for each other by text. Sometimes it is easier to say heartfelt wishes by texting, in much the same way as sending a greeting card, but a lot cheaper and faster. This year, I joined my church community for a Thanksgiving meal. There were about eighty of our church family and a few guests who gathered in our Fellowship Hall for the Thanksgiving feast. A great time was had by all!
Moving to Florida changed all that for me as there is color everywhere - all year long! There are green trees, blooming plants, blue water, colorful birds, and warmth. I am so thankful for living in this place of color and sun. Yes, I will confess that the celebrating Christmas minus the snow and cold is very different in the warmer sunny climate. Decorating for the holidays with my windows and doors open with temps in the 70-80’s is a bit of a mental challenge at times. However, the decorating spirit can be helped along a bit by watching Christmas movies while the tree is trimmed.
I believe there is so much joy to be experienced in God’s created world. Can you imagine the fun God has in art class! I love to read the creation accounts in Genesis in which God says six times in the first chapter that the natural created world was good. Then God created humankind and pronounced, “It was very good.” In this time of giving thanks, it truly doesn’t matter if we love white snow, or green trees, or colorful flowers, blue sky or gray clouds or even the fruitful black soil, we can be grateful for God’s creative perfection. When we look at the sun or moon in the sky we too can say, it is good. When we look into the eyes of another person and see the miracle of life, we can say, “It is very good.” Above all, I am so grateful for the love of Christ! Oh and really grateful that I did not have to do dishes!
