The Journey...

Holy week has arrived. I love Easter and all that is involved in the build up to the tomb. In this short week, Jesus rides a donkey like a king, basking in the adoration of the crowds who shout Hosanna, he feels the brutality of the mob yelling crucify him and finally he celebrates his resurrection from the tomb. This week is simply my favorite holy time in the life of Jesus and how the grace of what he accomplished on the cross has changed my life.

The Light Shines...

Once again we have a school shooting and it breaks my heart to hear more children have been killed. Sometimes it feels like there is darkness all around us. Most people say they are praying for the families, emergency and rescue workers as well as the medical teams who work tirelessly to save, repair and console the injured who have experienced this tragedy. Often times when the world seems dark, chaotic and out of control, I open my Bible to the first chapter of John, verse 5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Why? In a world of evil, fear, and desperation I need light and hope. For me, Jesus is the light and hope that shines into the world. How does Jesus bring the light into a sometimes dark world? Simply by his constant and abiding love for us. A love so great it overcomes all of the dark places in which we find ourselves. We have just entered into the Lenten season in which we focus on his death and resurrection. In this tragic time of sorrow, confusion and frustration we can walk alongside of Christ on his journey to the cross filled with unbelievable pain, betrayal and death.

Jericho is an ancient city. I mean really ancient! 8000 BC ancient! I bet it is hard for you to wrap your mind around that tidbit of information. Me too! This city was one of the places we visited as we toured the Holy Land. While standing atop a hill overlooking the modern city, our guide Mike gave us a history lesson about the area, pointed out the Mountain of Temptation, where Jesus wandered for 40-days following his baptism and indicated the road ancient travelers would use to travel from Samaria to Jerusalem. Oh by the way we also visited a Sycamore tree. You remember the story of a small man who wanted to see Jesus but the crowd was too tall so he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up in the tree and motioned for Zacchaeus to come out of the tree so that Jesus could visit with him at his home. So much history so little time.

A few years ago to celebrate graduation from seminary I went on a trip out west. My ride- along companion was my trusty much-needed GPS. Without it I would not have made it beyond South Dakota. I really have no sense of direction as to what is north, south, east or west. My daughter thinks that whichever direction I feel is the right way to go I should turn the opposite direction because then I would probably be going the correct direction. If you want me to visit, you need to describe important landmarks or better yet provide me with your address and I will give it to Siri and she will guide me.
