Ride to Glory...

He rode the donkey into Jerusalem.
The people sang, “Hosanna, Hosanna!”
They waved palms of praise.

The master said, “One of you will betray me.”
They replied, “who my Lord?”
He said, “Peter you will deny me.”
The disciple exclaimed, “I will never desert you!”
He said, “Before the cock crows
3 times you will deny me.”

The betrayer said, “Greetings Rabbi,” with a kiss in the night.
The one betrayed asked, “With a kiss you would betray me Judas?”
A sword was drawn, a slave was struck.
He commanded, “Put away your sword for all who take the sword will parish.”
In cuffs they took him away.

Podcasts are now my entertainment when I go for a walk. There are podcasts of all topics, lengths and interests. I enjoy listening to the news of the day, spirituality and faith-based discussions but at the top of my list are legal and crime stories. In another life, I would be a lawyer fighting for justice without prejudice. Well that is what I would try to do anyway. There are a number of podcasts that dig deep into a story that unfolds for a number of weeks. Generally they are crime stories of people who are serving time for crimes they did not commit. The investigative teams review cases with fresh eyes and search for new evidence of unsolved crimes or even help the courts overturn wrongful convictions. These cases keep me entertained for hours and my mind focused on righting wrongs as well as the challenges of justice system to get it right based on the presented evidence.

Sacrificial Leaf...

This has been a very hot summer in Florida! Yes I know I live in the land of heat and humidity but is seems this year has been particularly hot and humid.  One evening I ventured out into the fading heat and walked to the marina that is attached to our complex. Strolling along the dock, the breeze filtered through my hair and whispered softly on my face. It was lovely to watch the gray storm clouds swirl and listen as the breeze rustling through the leaves of the Mangrove trees. Despite the overwhelming summer heat, the water, sun and the multitude of colors always feeds my soul.

Hope for the Hopeless...

One of my classes in college was called, “Apostles of Hope” in which we studied the apostles, their relationship with Jesus and how they started a movement that centered on a new hope in the resurrected Christ. Their time with Jesus changed their lives forever. The apostles preached a message of hope grounded in a God of love and grace. As the class discussed these faithful believers my spirit became uncomfortable and troubled. When it was my turn to share my thoughts, I told the class that the God I had come to know was stuffed into a box that did not reflect the God of the apostles.  The box that held my God was lined with walls of guilt, shame, oppression and abusive authority. It was certainly not a God of love or grace. How could I understand the God of hope that the apostles knew? They met this God through Jesus Christ whom they came to trust and love. How could I lift the lid and learn to trust in that kind of God? As they listened to my story, one of the students named Julie, looked at me with compassion and told me that instead of uncovering the box all at once, it might be easier if I poked some holes in the top and let God out a little at a time. This very insightful advice gave me permission to build a new relationship of faith in a God of hope a little at a time.

"Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" by Charles Wesley

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Lo! the Sun's eclipse is over, Alleluia!
Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!
Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!

Paradise...

When I was a little girl my mom told me about a reoccurring dream she had throughout her life. Nope it wasn’t about those dreaded snakes that you cannot get rid of or the slow motion attempts to reach your destination. She told me that in her dream, she saw a gorgeous painting in the sky. She said that it had the most beautiful hues of reds, golds, blues, greens and so on.  Her face lit up as she described the glorious artwork. She felt this must be a picture of paradise. Despite the joy in seeing this reoccurring picture, she always felt a bit frustrated with this dream because each time she tried to get a closer look it moved behind a tree or out of sight. I can still remember how her eyes sparkled as she recalled the beauty of the picture and she hoped that someday she would get to see the picture up close.

Knees of Humility... By Denise Meyer

When I was young, sometimes in jest, I would say something outrageous to get a reaction from my mom, Jennie. Most often, after giving me a very shocked look she would wag her finger and tell me not to say things like that because that was bragging.  She wanted her children to be humble at heart and with her quiet beauty and strength she epitomized the message that Jesus was showing his disciples about being a servant. He was clear as he offered; “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13: 12b-16).  Jennie lived her life willing to give love and help anyone she met. In our family, there was always room at the dinner table for a visitor or there was plenty of floor space if someone needed a bed.

In Pursuit...

There are many ways to pursue something of importance. When women and men are attracted to each other they pursue moments or hours to spend time with each other in order to build a relationship, which may lead to a life-long bond. Many people pursue education or job opportunities to climb the corporate ladder or to find where their life interests are leading them in their careers. There are books that are written by people who travel the world to find a deeper meaning in life outside of their jobs. There are also millions of people who engage in seeking a closer relationship with a higher power, the universe or God. As a Christian, I have been pursuing a deeper more meaningful understanding of the Triune God.
