Stormy Waters...

The symphony of sound orchestrated
by the turbulent wind
Reaches my ears before my eyes
see the water.
An endless stream of rumbling waves
crashes onto the shore.
Excitedly I step into the swirling
mass of chaos,
The waves wrestle around me
pulling and pushing me to and fro.
Over and over the current plays
tug-of-war around me

A New Day...

Dawn breaks into the night sky,
Twinkling stars vanish into the melting darkness.
Fading rays of moonlight kiss the still water.
A new day dawns…

Tranquil voluminous clouds rise high,
Their billowing formations shift in the breeze.
Dazzling peek-a-boo lights electrify their depths,
A new day begins…

Soft streams of sunlight ease into the twilight,
Filtered rays of warmth breaks into
The receding shadows of the night sky.
Azure blue creeps onto the horizon,
A new day rises…

Puffs of air wander through the leaves as
Ripples of water dance in the rising mist.
Mighty clouds embrace the unfolding color.
The edge of day cannot hold back the rising orb.
Warm yellow light takes hold and will not be denied.
A new day lives...

Once again creation is awakened
Another night has passed,
And God has turned the page.
Rested eyes open and anticipate the new day.
A new day shines…

Colorful Thanks...

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone and now the shopping season begins for the “big” holiday we know as Christmas. But wait… Let’s stick with giving thanks for a bit longer. This special Thursday is generally spent with family and friends giving thanks for one another. As both of my daughters live out of state we were unable to celebrate together as a family but we did gave thanks for each other by text. Sometimes it is easier to say heartfelt wishes by texting, in much the same way as sending a greeting card, but a lot cheaper and faster. This year, I joined my church community for a Thanksgiving meal. There were about eighty of our church family and a few guests who gathered in our Fellowship Hall for the Thanksgiving feast. A great time was had by all!

Paradise...

When I was a little girl my mom told me about a reoccurring dream she had throughout her life. Nope it wasn’t about those dreaded snakes that you cannot get rid of or the slow motion attempts to reach your destination. She told me that in her dream, she saw a gorgeous painting in the sky. She said that it had the most beautiful hues of reds, golds, blues, greens and so on.  Her face lit up as she described the glorious artwork. She felt this must be a picture of paradise. Despite the joy in seeing this reoccurring picture, she always felt a bit frustrated with this dream because each time she tried to get a closer look it moved behind a tree or out of sight. I can still remember how her eyes sparkled as she recalled the beauty of the picture and she hoped that someday she would get to see the picture up close.

Where Do I See God...

Morning is my favorite time of the day. As the dawn breaks, I grab my coffee and hurry to my deck to enjoy the fresh sea air and watch as the world comes to life. Each day is new and fresh and I want to capture the beauty of the sunrise with words. It seems impossible to transcribe the grandeur of what lies before me with any clarity, however it is in these precious moments of splendor that writing helps to capture my attention and identify where I see God:

Pilgrimage or Bust...

Recently I attended a retreat for the Methodist Ministry Inquiry Process with twenty-one other candidates who are seeking to answer a call into ministry. We have identified that God is calling us into some sort of ministry in the Methodist denomination. The theme of the retreat was called Pilgrimage, which encouraged us to spend time on a spiritual pilgrimage to discern how we officially will serve in the church. So throughout our time together, whether in worship and/or mentoring sessions, we discussed where God might be leading us into a call of ordained or local ministry. These “call” stories are generally not as clear-cut as one would think.  Sometimes, if there is no clear and concise direction from God, these moments can be a bit frustrating in their ambiguity. There is always a tendency for me to think I am the only person who does not have a clear vision of what God is calling me to do. However, there were a number of candidates who, like me, were still trying to figure out where we thought God was leading us into ministry. Actually that is ok because it means we are open to where God is leading us. But a spiritual pilgrimage? How does one go about doing that?

Hope in Dark Times…

Some people are fortunate enough to have a “forever” friend and mine is Linda. She is the ying to my yang. She lights up our friendship with her positive outlook and wonderful sense of humor. Even though we live thousands of miles apart, we are soul sisters in our hearts forever and always. We stay in touch and given half a chance, we can talk for hours on topics like our grandchildren, work, religion, and even politics. Recently, we were able to get together for lunch and shopping.  As we talked, it became apparent that Linda was hurting in mind, body and spirit. Our previous conversations on the phone, did not allow me to get a read on how deeply she has been affected by the difficulties of the last few years. As we sat together, I sensed a real tiredness both mentally and spiritually.

God's Fun

Last week I heard a song that states that God knows and controls all of the lightning bolts on earth.  Really? Is God directing every single lightning bolt in the sky? Now please understand that I am not diminishing God’s power at all. But I wonder if God desires a creation that is new and fresh, full of vibrant colors, fragrances, and beauty of unexpected randomness.
