Robust Hope...

Thanksgiving is over and now we can look forward to the Christmas holiday season. The retail shopping experience seems to start earlier and earlier each year as the decorated Christmas trees have adorned the store aisles since before Halloween. It is a holiday filled with lights, beautifully decorated trees, Christmas carols, parties, and a time of buying gifts for people we care about. Little children are excited to see Santa and insist that they have been nice rather than naughty and excitedly hand the jolly bearded one their long wish lists. The adults scramble from store to store searching for just the right present to put under the tree. It can a fun but hectic four weeks!

Spirit of Gratitude...

This week we celebrate being grateful. Thursday is the actual Thanksgiving Day, which commemorates how the pilgrims gave thanks for surviving a harsh winter and a bountiful harvest. Sometimes I think we see this day as just about eating turkey, watching the parade and of course football. It also ushers in the start of the holiday shopping season. Too often, we get so wrapped up in all of the events and food that we forget the reason Thanksgiving exists. This day is not a religious holiday. It is an American day of gratefulness. That being said, everyday should be a day that we celebrate being alive, being free and able to speak as well as protest and hold free elections. There is so much we should be grateful for each and every day.

Human family by Maya Angelou

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I've sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I've seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I've not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England's moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we're the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

Recently my daughter, Kelly, moved to Houston, TX to begin a new chapter in her career with the company that she has worked with for years. This past weekend, I flew to Texas to help her get settled into her new home. My girls and I have an understanding that when they move, I will do my very best to help them unpack and decorate their new living space. I like new beginnings especially when it comes to opportunities for my girls.

Let There Be Peace... Hope... Love....

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

 Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred,
let me sow love;
where there is injury,
pardon;
where there is doubt,
faith;
where there is despair,
 hope;
where there is darkness,
light;
and where there is sadness,
joy.

O Divine Master, grant
that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood
as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we
receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that
we are born to eternal life. Amen

Art of Repairing Brokenness

Last week my friends and I were discussing the line between brokenness and becoming whole. The word “broken” has been used especially in faith-based circles to describe the hurts, pain, betrayals and really any issues that have affected our lives negatively. I can very easily identify with how the word sometimes describes a broken spirit, broken heart, broken confidence and so on. We are all broken at some point in our lives and we can even go in and out of those times of struggle in our lives. So when my friend Lou looked at me and said, “You are whole” it caught me off guard. He said it twice as he looked me straight in the eyes. What did wholeness or being made whole really look like? Honestly I haven’t given much thought about how the spirit of brokenness is mended and is once again restored to full capacity. Yes I have spent quite a bit of time, in the recent years, identifying the broken pieces of my past experiences and have worked to rewrite my story, however I just haven’t thought about fixing all of those pieces to make them whole.
