When my girls were young, they would run into the house from school ready to share the events of their day with me. Sometimes, I was in the middle of some task and didn’t want to stop and listen. I am a very persistent and focused sort of person and it was hard for me to break away and give them my full attention. That of course was not fair to them or a good parenting practice on my part. When they got older and tried to do the same to me…well let’s just say that I managed to get their full attention so they could listen to what I had to say. Truly this attention deficit is not something I am proud of and have always regretted not being fully present with my girls. What more could I have learned about my girls, their friends and school events if they would have had my complete attention? |

I asked God for strength that I might achieve. I was made weak that I might learn to obey.

It has been a real struggle for me to decide what to write this week. Lately, it feels like so many people are experiencing a lot of pain and anxiety. People are struggling with an unexpected cancer diagnosis, the death of a parent, a failing marriage, and a CAT scan that shows a brain tumor. This past weekend, a tornado ripped through the farming community leaving a swath of destruction in its wake. There is ongoing mourning and outrage for victims of bombings that kill fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. Many of us are feeling anxious about the political leaders worldwide who are trying to establish the governing power of their nations. All of this pain, fear and angst has touched my spirit and at times given me a feeling of hopelessness. Where is hope to be found in these feelings of doubt and helplessness? |
I love the movie, Gladiator! I shouldn’t like it so much because the story-line is brutal and unforgiving. However, the main character Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, is a courageous, strong-willed fighter who finds a way to overcome his own adversity to help others. Without going into great movie detail, after his wife and son are murdered, Maximus is also betrayed by jealous leader and enslaved as a gladiator. The story follows the wounded broken man’s life, as a fearless warrior, fueled by hate and vengeance to become a leader willing to die for someone's freedom. |
